'MLB The Show 17' Review: New Features Bring Authentic Vibe to Gameplay
Sony San Diego's latest Major League Baseball video game, "MLB The Show 17," has been drawing positive responses from gamers and critics since its release last March.
According to an IGN review, the new features included in "MLB The Show 17" make the game all the more authentic and fun to play. The opening video is said to be entertaining, while the new look of the menu is fresh to the eye. There is also reportedly better lighting used, as well as more realistic animations throughout the game.
Sony has also introduced new elements in the MLB Network broadcast. On-air personalities Harold Reynolds and Dan Plesac are still as engaging as ever. If there is one negative thing to note in the broadcast, though, it is said to be the tendency of the commentators to repeat words in different plays.
Meanwhile, out of the four main modes – Road to the Show, Franchise, Diamond Dynasty and Retro Mode – the last one reportedly falls below expectations.
"While I loved those old games, this mode falls flat for me. For one thing, splash screens, text, sound effects, and music are delivered with old-school charm, while the players and animations are still current gen. And as good as the current gameplay is, it doesn't quite fit in with the loose arcade setting of the past. I get that the mode is likely designed for local multiplayer sessions with your buddies, but I can't see any other reason to revisit it," the IGN review reads.
Meanwhile, one "dramatic" change introduced in "MLB The Show 17" involves how players interact during tension-filled scenes. According to Sports Grid, the addition of verbal abuse used by players to rattle their opponents makes the game all the more realistic. Gamers can actually show their displeasure by interacting with other players and make threatening remarks. Just like in real-life baseball games, a little beef here and there reportedly adds excitement to the gameplay.
