More 'Star Wars' Movies Coming Than the Five You Might Already Know
A high-level Disney executive has recently revealed that the epic story set in a galaxy far, far away will continue beyond the announced and rumored films that are set to release from this year onward.
Bob Iger, chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company, talked to BBC's Newsbeat about its "Star Wars" and "Marvel" franchises. Regarding "Star Wars," he has this to say:
"There are five Star Wars films — four more with Episode VII: The Force Awakens — that are in varying stages of development and production. There will be more after that, I don't know how many, I don't know how often."
These refer to "Star Wars: Episode VIII," "Star Wars: Episode IX," and three "Star Wars" spin-off films.
The first of these films is "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" that is set to release on Dec. 16. This will be followed by the second part of the trilogy that started with "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," "Star Wars: Episode VIII," which will hit theaters on Dec. 15, 2017. A Han Solo anthology that features a younger version of the iconic character will be released on May 25, 2018. In 2019, "Star Wars: Episode IX" will come out. Another anthology flick, this time about Boba Fett, is rumored to arrive in 2020.
Beyond 2020, nothing is known yet. "Star Wars" fans will have to wait for Disney or Lucasfilm to announce any details about future movies after the rumored Boba Fett anthology.
The Guardian notes how Igor's statement confirms a previous suggestion made by journalist Adam Rogers. Writing in a Wired magazine article in November, Rogers said that the "Star Wars" franchise could go on indefinitely. He based his conclusion on interviews with "Star Wars" insiders. He called it "the forever franchise," based on how the company intends to release a new "Star Wars" movie each year. This, of course, depends very much on how moviegoers respond.
