The series is set to start production in Toronto in May.

As a spinoff of the young adult or YA novel "Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" which became a feature film in 2013, the TV series will follow the story of its main protagonist, Clarissa "Clary" Fay. She discovers on her 18th birthday that she comes from a long line of Shadowhunters -- half human, half angel hybrids who hunt demons and protect the innocent. She is suddenly thrust into the challenges of demon hunting when her mother goes missing, with the help of another Shadowhunter Jace and her best friend Simon.

This TV adaptation has the sign off of Constantin Films, the rights holder to adaptation of the novel series.

Another report in Collider however casts doubt on whether the TV series will fare better than the feature film. The report cites McG's performance in his feature films, although it also notes that the director has some long running TV shows in his portfolio.

"The Mortal Instruments" is a series of young adult novels written by Cassandra Clare. All the novels in the series made it to the US best seller list every time they are released. The first novel, "City of Bones" was first published in 2007. This became the basis for the feature film adaptation in 2013. The latest novel came out on May 27, 2014.
