Nate Diaz vs. Conor McGregor: Diaz says the UFC is 'making excuses' for 'The Notorious'
Nate Diaz may have scored both the biggest victory and paycheck of his career, but he still remains a bit disappointed despite of it.
The younger Diaz scored a submission victory over Conor McGregor at UFC 196 on March 5th, taking the fight on eleven days' notice. And like "The Notorious", he was not exactly fighting in his weight class, as he went up 15 pounds heavier.
Diaz did get a ton of praise after the fight, mainly because he was able to break the streak and humble McGregor. But on the flipside, he feels that everyone in the mixed martial arts game is still on the Irishman's side.
The 30-year old mixed martial arts fighter lamented his sentiments in an interview with Brett Okamoto of ESPN. He also went on to point out that while many are praising McGregor for his post-fight behavior, he believes it would have been the exact opposite if he came out on the losing end.
"I don't mean to be bitter, but there are a lot of excuses being made for this guy," Diaz said. "He's talking about winning the first round. There are five rounds in a fight. Who gives a s**t if you won a round? You lost."
The Stockton, California native also stressed his intent to fight big fights, and big fights alone. After the fight, UFC president Dana White opened up the idea of Diaz facing current welterweight champion Robbie Lawler.
Diaz, however, says he was more interested in facing lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos in a rematch, after losing in 2014, noting how welterweight match-ups are more of his brother Nick's fights.
But above all, Diaz's main concern is to fight the biggest-named fighter and earn another big paycheck.
"Money talks. I want the biggest fight," Diaz said. Whoever I've got to fight -- the biggest show, biggest payday -- that's what I want."
