National Pastry Day Today
National Pastry Day marks the celebration of beloved baked goods on Monday, and people across the U.S. are participating in the event.
Although much of the nation is experiencing a cold snap and even some snow fall, National Pastry Day is sure to brighten anyone's day on Monday.
The formal definition of pastry is a dough of flour, shortening and water used as a base and covering in dishes such as pies, much like those found on Thanksgiving Day.
However, National Pastry Day arrives two weeks after Thanksgiving and just ahead of Christmas on Dec. 9 each year-- just in time for sweet treat-eaters to find another excuse to head to the bakery.
Popular pastries include the bear claw, apple strudel, croissants, pies, and turnovers, among many more. While pastries have been popular since 2600 b.c., today's pastries include dough such as flaky, puff, and phyllo, and even Pop Tarts are considered pastries, making it easy for everyone to enjoy the treat with ease.
On Twitter, hundreds of users sounded off about their National Pastry Day celebrations on Monday, including William Shatner.
"Another early day of shooting," the Priceline pitch man posted. "I'm making sure there will be brownies on the set… Tomorrow is National Pastry Day!"
Shatner later reminded his Twitter followers that the day after National Pastry Day is National Lager Day.
"Since we are talking food days if those brownie and pastry crumbs leave your throat scratchy; tomorrow wash it down with National Lager Day," he wrote.
Joining Shatner is his celebrations was Twitter user Lauren who posted, "It's national pastry day now I have an excuse to eat delicious sweets all day."
Among the hundreds of National Pastry Day tweets included Mel's, who encouraged pastry lovers to support local bake sales while Twitter user Michael shared that he bought an Apple Danish.
Meanwhile, December is also National Fruit Cake Month and National Egg Nog Month.
