Native American Hero 'Red Wolf' To Get Own Book, According to Marvel
Marvel is about to inject some "diversity" into its line of comic book heroes as it plans to release a book about a Native American hero that has appeared in Marvel comics in the early days. According to a report in Mashable, Marvel is doing a series of comic books for the hero "Red Wolf," who recently appeared in the Western-themed issue of the "1872" series.
The report claimed that although Native Americans have appeared in Marvel comics previously, no Native American character has ever gotten its own series. The report interestingly noted that when Marvel revealed that it was going to do a reboot of its comic characters, Red Wolf was included in the teaser art that accompanied that announcement.
Red Wolf's first appearance was in Avengers #80 in 1970 but he was known by another name - William Talltrees. He had his own series that ran for nine issues in 1972. The stories mainly focused on the Old West. The Red Wolf that will be featured in the upcoming series, however, will be a different take on the hero. He will be living in the American Southwest where he will be battling against criminals using "more grounded powers."
Writer Nathan Edmondson and artist Jeffrey Veregge make up the creative team. Veregge is himself of Native American origin, being a member of the Port Gamble S'Klallam Tribe from Washington. As cited in the report, he is excited to work on the project, saying that "There's not a character like Red Wolf out there right now."
Edmondson acknowledged that the Red Wolf, as portrayed in the earlier series, had supernatural powers such as being able to talk to wolves but he also said that the new series will be their "take on that character" and therefore, he will have a different origins and back story. He will be portrayed as originating from the alternate universe as depicted in "1872," but he will currently share a universe with Captain America and the Avengers.
The "Red Wolf" book will be out by December.
