NBA Trade Rumors: A Deal for Anthony Davis Would Elevate the Phoenix Suns, But It Remains Unlikely for Now

Suns may have the assets needed to swing a deal for the talented Davis

Barring one massive turnaround, the Phoenix Suns are likely going to be one of the worst teams in the NBA again during the upcoming 2017-18 NBA season.

It is a stretch of futility that the franchise is not exactly known for, and understandably, there are fans out there who want to see the losing come to an end sometime soon.

Unfortunately for the Suns, there is no easy way out of the Western Conference's cellar.

They are going to have to develop the young guys on the team the right way if they want to make it back to relevance.

The Suns can also try to take a detour, one that is risky but may provide them with a shortcut back to the top or at least the upper half of the Western Conference. However, it involves trading for the New Orleans Pelicans' Anthony Davis.

As Lucas Johnson recently wrote for Valley of the Suns, Davis is an "established super star" who can fit in well with the Suns. The Suns have been looking for a talented big man to pair up with their rising star Devin Booker for a while now, and Davis can easily fit into that role.

If the Suns can deal for Davis, they should seriously consider executing that move. But the issue, of course, is that they will likely not be the only team bidding.

Should the Pelicans ever make Davis available via trade, there is a good chance that just about every team in the league will at least make an offer.

The Suns may be able to outbid most teams, but the Boston Celtics can probably put together a better offer if they wanted to.

On top of that, with players exercising more control over where they play now, Davis could simply say that he does not want to join a still uncertain situation in Phoenix and immediately make any kind of deal difficult for the team to swallow knowing he could leave the moment his contract expires.

The Suns dealing for Davis is by no means out of the question, though it could be an incredibly risky and potentially franchise-defining move should they ever decide to go ahead with it.

At this point, the Suns may be better served to see how things play out for at least another season while keeping close tabs on Davis. The situation right now is not that favorable to them, but that may still change.
