NBA Trade Rumors: Should the Boston Celtics Seek Outside Help to Fill the Perceived Void in Their Rotation?

The Celtics lost their opening night starter Gordon Hayward to a potentially season-ending injury

Opening night took a tragic turn for the Boston Celtics after starter Gordon Hayward sustained a potential season-ending injury. He is now recovering and his teammates, ever resilient, are playing on and putting their best efforts forward in the wake of that truly unfortunate event.

Hayward's absence will be felt, and there will be no real way for the Celtics to replace the production he could have provided.

Still, the Celtics have their eyes on contending this season, and because of that, they may need to find someone who can help them out as their teammate recuperates.

In a recent article, HoopsHype's Alex Kennedy named a few players who the Celtics could go after if they can successfully secure a Disabled Player Exception from the NBA.

Included in the list are Kyle Anderson of the San Antonio Spurs, Corey Brewer of the Los Angeles Lakers, Jared Dudley of the Phoenix Suns, Wesley Johnson of the Los Angeles Clippers and Courtney Lee of the New York Knicks.

So, should Celtics fans count on seeing a deal go through for one of those players?

If the Celtics really believe that they have to add another veteran to solidify their wing rotation, then yes, they would likely go after one of those players. However, there really may be no pressing need for them to do that.

Since Hayward does so many things on the court, no one player that can be had easily via a trade will be able to replicate his versatility.

The Celtics were already considered as a longshot to overtake the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference and that was when Hayward was still fully healthy.

The reality is that the Celtics may just be better off spreading out the minutes earmarked for Hayward to some of their young players and see if any of them can step up. Rookie Jayson Tatum and second-year player Jaylen Brown have put up good numbers filling in for Hayward thus far, and the Celtics may also be well-served to see what they have in another rookie, Semi Ojeleye.

In search of a suitable replacement for Hayward, the Celtics may not have to look to another team for help. They may just want to check out their depth chart and call on the next man to step up and do his best.
