NBA Trade Rumors: Terrence Jones Unlikely to Sign With the Boston Celtics
Contenders have been adding veterans who were waived these past few days, but some of these players have yet to sign with a new team. When forward Terrence Jones was waived last Thursday, many believed that he would generate some interest from teams in need of a versatile player who could play the two forward positions.
He reportedly had preliminary talks with the Boston Celtics, but according to Adam Himmelsbach of the Boston Globe, he didn't sign with the team because he wanted to go to a team where he could play heavy minutes. He most certainly wouldn't get the minutes he wanted if he played for the Celtics.
The team already has Kelly Olynyk, Amir Johnson, Tyler Zeller and Jonas Jerebko vying for playing time in the frontcourt, and nobody is going to take minutes away from Al Horford. He can get some minutes in the small forward position, but he has to play behind Jae Crowder and Jaylen Brown.
Meanwhile, ESPN's Chris Forsberg has also pointed out that Celtics general manager Danny Ainge hasn't really been active in the buyout market in recent years.
"The Celtics, underwhelmed by the contributions of post-deadline signings during much of their most recent Big Three era, have stayed away from the free-agent bargain bin during Brad Stevens' tenure as coach. They have often preferred to sign future-minded D-Leaguers when roster spots have been available," he said in his report.
The Celtics need to address their rebounding woes, and Jones wouldn't have been that much of an upgrade anyway in that department. He's not exactly known for his rebounding. He's more like a stretch power forward.
Jones has averaged a respectable 11.5 points and 5.9 rebounds this season while playing 24.8 minutes per game. He's one of the most versatile players in the free agent market, so he will eventually get a call from a team.
