NBA Trade Rumors: Why the Boston Celtics Dealing for Paul George Could Still Happen

Boston Celtics also reportedly interested in dealing for Jimmy Butler

The Boston Celtics are the envy of many teams, as they possess a young and still improving collection of players as well as numerous highly coveted draft picks that can yield future stars themselves, which is probably why numerous NBA trade rumors have them linked to so many superstar-level players who could be on the market.

Most recently, new rumors are linking the Boston-based squad to a superstar swingman currently playing for the Indiana Pacers.

According to a recent report from Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, the Celtics are reportedly still trying to get the Pacers and the Chicago Bulls on the line to talk about potential deals involving George and Jimmy Butler respectively.

The George rumor, in particular, seems especially interesting given that the Pacers aren't exactly known as a franchise that likes to trade its star players.

George is an incredible two-way player, and at 26, it's easy to imagine him maintaining this high level of play and perhaps getting even better in the years ahead.

These are just some of the reasons why it's easy to understand why the Celtics could be interested in acquiring George, but those things also seem to make it sensible for the Pacers to just keep him and continue to build the team up with him as the foundational piece.

The problem for the Pacers, however, is that it's unclear just how much better they can be.

Big man Myles Turner possesses All-Star potential, but him and George may not be enough to get the Pacers over the hump, especially come playoff time, when they will have to deal with the league's elite other teams.

All of this is why that Boston rumor remains interesting and worth paying attention to.

Should the Pacers decide that they may be as good as they can be right now and come to the conclusion that there is no clear and obvious path to the title for them, then dealing George to the Celtics in exchange for high draft picks and young players can at least put them in better position to bring together the next great Indiana team.

Paul George going to the Boston Celtics remains a longshot at this point in time, but if new NBA trade rumors start to hint that such a deal could happen, it's at least understandable why both sides may want this deal.
