'NCIS' season 13 spoilers; Tony to take a leadership role

Season 12 ended with a jaw-dropping cliff-hanger when Agent Gibbs (Mark Harmon) was shot multiple times by young Luke Harris (Daniel Zolghadri), the kid he was trying to save, who, as it turned out, was actually a member of the terrorist organization known as The Calling.

Fans of the show will most definitely see Agent Gibbs again since Mark Harmon has renewed his contract with CBS. In the meantime, Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) will step up and take on the role of team leader, while the boss man recuperates.

The season premiere will pick up where things left off. The episode is titled "Stop the Bleeding." It will follow Tony and Joanna Teague (Mimi Rogers), the mother of Agent Ned Dorneget who died last season, as they hunt down The Calling and stop them once and for all.

Comedian Jon Cryer will guest star on the hit show. He will play Doctor Taft a renowned Navy surgeon who will eventually save the life of Agent Gibbs and become his friend. Meanwhile, veteran actor Muse Watson will return next season as Mike Franks, despite the fact that his character is dead. It is believed by many fans that Gibbs will see his mentor during flashbacks.

Executive producer Gary Glassberg talked about the upcoming season and relayed the tension that fans will see between Gibbs and Tony. "Gibbs is in a difficult place, a physically difficult place. ... We're still functioning as a team, but there's absolutely some conflict. There are issues that have to get worked out between team members, very specifically between Tony and Gibbs. ... It's tricky, and they're sensitive to what he's going through, and they're trying to be there for him as coworker and as friend and as family member. They're being ultra-supportive of him," he said.

The personality of Gibbs has changed and it is this change that will put him at odds with his entire team. There will be many ramifications — both physical and mental — that the show will explore.

"NCIS" will return on Sept. 22.
