Netflix Cancels 'House of Cards,' Feels 'Deeply Troubled' Amid Allegations Against Kevin Spacey
One of Netflix's most successful series is coming to an end as one of its stars got caught in the middle of a huge controversy.
According to a report by Deadline, the streaming giant decided to pull the plug on political drama-thriller "House of Cards" amid the sexual allegations involving its lead star, Kevin Spacey. The show's upcoming sixth season, which begins sometime next year, will be the final one.
In a statement, Netflix and Media Rights Capital said that they were "deeply troubled" by the news involving the show's star. "In response to last night's revelations, executives from both of our companies arrived in Baltimore this afternoon to meet with our cast and crew to ensure that they continue to feel safe and supported. As previously scheduled, Kevin Spacey is not working on set at this time," the joint statement read.
Spacey, who plays the role of Frank Underwood, is currently facing allegations of committing unwanted sexual advances against stage and film actor Anthony Rapp back in 1986. Rapp said in an interview with Buzzfeed aired on Monday that Spacey, who was 26 years of age in 1986, put him in bed and "seduced" him.
Rapp claimed that he was very much aware that Spacey was attempting sexual advantages at the time when they were both involved in a revival of "Long Day's Journey Into Night and Precious Sons."
In turn, Spacey quickly responded with an apology directed to Rapp via Twitter. The 58-year-old actor said that he no longer remembers the incident, but if he did behave as such, he owes him "the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior." Moreover, he also apologized for all the emotions Rapp had been carrying since the incident.
In addition, Spacey also admitted to having "romantic encounters with men" throughout his life, and he has now chosen "to live as a gay man."
Meanwhile, The Guardian reported that a spokesperson from Netflix confirmed that the move to cancel the show after Season 6 was made several months earlier. The decision did not have anything to do with the sexual allegations against Spacey.
