Netflix Mystery Drama 'Dark' Gets Season 2 Order

"Dark" has been picked up for a second season by Netflix.

More episodes of the German-language drama can be expected next year, according to reports. News of "Dark's" season 2 renewal does not come as a surprise. Due to its gripping storytelling, the show is often dubbed as the "Stranger Things" of Germany. The series has been enjoying its golden moment since it bowed at the 2017 Toronto Film Festival in September.

"We are overwhelmed by the response to 'Dark' and are thrilled that our story has been a success with a global audience," showrunners Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese said in a joint press statement. "And our fans can be sure that we have plenty of surprises in store for the second season of 'Dark.'"

Created by bo Odar and Friese, "Dark" has been a huge and unexpected success for Netflix. The streaming giant is notorious for not revealing specific viewership numbers. However, it was confirmed the subtitled series is one of its best-performing foreign language shows to date.

The company also deflected the program's similarities to 2016 breakout hit "Stranger Things." According to Netflix's VP for international originals, Kelly Luegenbiehl, the series stood on its own. "When we first heard about 'Dark,' we realized very early on that we hadn't seen anything like this show before — in Germany or anywhere else in the world," said the exec.

Set in a present-day German town, "Dark" explores the disappearance of two young kids. The double lives and broken relationships among four families are also exposed as the story unfolds. Although it starts out as a mystery-led drama, the show later takes a supernatural turn when some characters are transported to the same German town but in the year 1986.

Netflix has yet to announce a premiere date for "Dark" season 2.
