Netflix Originals News: Marvel's Street Hero Luke Cage and the Music Behind the Series

The music supervisors of the series "Luke Cage" shares in detail how they match the music with the scenes in the show.

Marvel's Luke Cage (Mike Colter) and the hip-hop world are seen on Netflix's new promotional video release.

The new Netflix Original, "Luke Cage", features a bulletproof hero whose mission is to clean up the dirty and dire streets of Harlem. Luke Cage's character first appeared on Marvel's "Jessica Jones", which is another one of the streaming giant's originals.

Colter shares his thought about the hero he currently plays, saying that he can well identify with the character for his reluctance to accept his fate. Like Luke Cage, he does not like being thrust into the spotlight. But he realizes that for Cage, it is something that he has to learn to live with as being a hero fits him like a glove.

"Luke Cage" Street Level Hero

Music supervisor Adrian Younge talks about how the music for the "Luke Cage" series goes. According to him, in each episode, one hip-hop album is featured. Younge also adds that he will be doing some music arrangement for the series with another music advisor, Ali Shaheed Muhammad.

The series will have 13 episodes. Showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker says that each episode gets its title from the songs of the hip-hop duo, Gang Starr. Titles like "Soliloquy of Chaos", "Moment of Truth", and "It's All Kind of Influenced Like That" will figure in the "Luke Cage" series.

Making a mark in hip-hop history

No, "Luke Cage" is not a documentary about the hip-hop culture. However, part of the music's role is to add depth to Cage's stories, adventures, and mission. It is a very important element of the series as it helps set the right tone and brings out the emotions from its viewers.

Coker says that the music compositions will revolve around the storyline's portrayal of how it feels to be with Luke Cage when you are around him.

Mixing the music's street-level authenticity with the "Luke Cage" brand of fiction will be like bringing the viewers backstage to witness the theme unfold before their very eyes.

According to the music supervisors, this development is another history in the making for the hip-hop community.

Marvel-Netflix collaboration

"Luke Cage" is just one of the four live-action series that Netflix is developing for their subscribers. This is part of the company's deal with Marvel. Netflix binge-watchers already had a glimpse of the first two action-packed series, "Jessica Jones" and "Daredevil". After "Luke Cage", Marvel's "Iron Fist" will follow, with Finn Jones taking the title character.

The collection of stories will not end with "Iron Fist", though. The four major title characters Luke Cage, Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist will team up for a fifth Marvel series also on Netflix.

"Luke Cage" is set to premiere on September 30. Its first trailer was released on August 9.
