Netflix Renews 'American Vandal' for Eight-Episode Season 2
Netflix has officially renewed mockumentary "American Vandal" for a second season.
The streaming giant released a season 2 announcement video, which features shots of different students in a yearbook. In a voiceover, Peter (Tyler Alvarez) asks, "Can you be born above the law?"
For those who are unaware, the first season of "American Vandal" focuses on the aftermath of a prank that resulted in 27 high school faculty cars being vandalized with phallic images. All signs point to troublemaker Dylan Maxwell (Jimmy Tatro), a senior, but there may be more to the case than meets the eye. In the style of other documentaries like "Making a Murderer," sophomore student Peter and his friend Sam (Griffin Gluck) documents the investigation and tries to get to the bottom of the case.
According to Variety, the upcoming season will consist of eight episodes. Series co-creators Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda, along with showrunner Dan Lagana, are all expected to work on the new season.
Entertainment Weekly spoke to Perrault and Yacenda in September and discussed what season 2 would entail. They admitted that they already had a good scope of the new season and teased that it will feature an entirely different vibe. They also revealed that there will be a new setting.
"I think it's safe to say that Peter and Sam would make a documentary in a different high school and in a different environment, for a different crime," Yacenda said.
While season 1 took inspiration from a number of true-crime documentaries, Perrault believes they do not have a problem exploring other recurring motifs in the genre.
"All I think we can say right now is that there are so many true-crime tropes. Thankfully, this genre is only increasing in popularity, so there's so much more to play with that we haven't done yet," he said. "So we'd love to keep the series going and love to play on some new tropes of the genre that have emerged since we were working on the show."
"American Vandal" season 2 will be released in 2018.
