New 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' Film, New Rodrick? Fans Express Disappointment
As 20th Century Fox released its second and latest trailer for "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul," disgruntled fans of the franchise took to Twitter to express their disappointment over the new actor that was cast to play Rodrick Heffley, Greg's older brother.
The new actor, Charlie Wright, replaced Devon Bostick who played Rodrick in the first three installments of "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" since its first movie released in 2010.
Wright is known to star in TV series "The Millers" and "Better Things." "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul" is his second movie after his role as Chuck in "Ingrid Goes West."
Fans did not welcome Wright's portrayal of Rodrick, starting a Twitter hashtag trend called #NotMyRodrick. Some fans tweet that the replacement "ruined their childhood" and say that he looks more like Willy Wonka, while another also said that he looks like a kid that the actual Rodrick would bully.
To be fair, however, the upcoming "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" movie replaced all of the actors from the previous installments. In the lead role is Jason Drucker as Greg, who was previously portrayed by Zachary Gordon. Owen Asztalos also replaces Robert Capron in the role of Rowley, while Alicia Silverstone and Tom Everett Scott play the parents Susan and Frank.
The premise of the upcoming film revolves around Greg, who has successfully convinced his family to go on a roadtrip to attend grandma's birthday, but his purpose really is to attend a gaming convention nearby.
Despite casting replacements, the movie is still based on the book series by Jeff Kinney, and it will still be directed by David Bowers - the director of the first three "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" films.
Its release date is slated for May 19, opposite to yet another 20th Century Fox film, "Alien: Covenant," which is also part of an existing franchise.
