New England Patriots Interested in Acquiring Richard Sherman if Malcolm Butler Leaves

The Seattle Seahawks have been in the news a lot lately. First, there was talk about Marshawn Lynch coming out of retirement and playing for the Oakland Raiders. And there were reports saying Richard Sherman was on the trading block. If the All-Pro cornerback is available for trade, which teams are going to target him?

According to the Boston Herald's Jeff Howe, the New England Patriots are one of the teams interested in Sherman and they reportedly pursue him if they lose Malcolm Butler. However, CSNNE.com's Tom E. Curran has reported that the Patriots are not really interested in acquiring the cornerback because Butler isn't leaving.

"According to a source, Butler is beginning to understand that he'll probably wind up signing his tender with the Patriots and playing out 2017 in New England," Curran said in his report.

Well, that's too bad. Teams will probably quiver with fear if they see a powerhouse like the Patriots line up Sherman and Stephon Gilmore at cornerback next season. Of course, anything can still happen. Just imagine the possibilities.

A lot of pundits also believe that Sherman will fit in just fine with the Patriots and they should attempt to acquire him.

"I'll take Richard Sherman right now over Malcolm Butler," Skip Bayless said on a recent episode of FOX Sports' "Undisputed."

"If you can start at corner Stephon Gilmore, the most valuable corner out there in the free agent market, and Richard Sherman, arguably the best corner in pro football or one of the top three, you're dominating on defense next year," he continued.

Bayless makes a good point. If the Patriots have the chance to acquire Sherman they should take it. It's true that he can be a distraction at times, but the pros will outweigh the cons.

The Seahawks are willing to trade him right now and the Patriots should at least explore the possibility of acquiring him.
