New Line Cinema to Do Another 'Nightmare on Elm Street' Reboot
New Line Cinema has decided to do another reboot of classic 1980s horror film "Nightmare on Elm Street."
Five years after New Line Cinema and Platinum Dunes did a remake of Wes Craven's 1984 supernatural slasher movie, "Nightmare on Elm Street," the film studio is doing another reboot to bring back Freddy Krueger, according to Bloody Disgusting.
Robert Englund, who played the first burned boogeyman in the original movie, and the seven sequels thereafter, grew to popularity brandishing Wolverine-meets-Edward-Scissorhands-like blades in the place of his fingers, killing teenagers in their dreams, and in reality.
Jackie Earle Haley inherited Krueger's razor glove in the 2010 remake that co-starred Rooney Mara and Kyle Gallner and grossed $115 million at the worldwide box office, but was panned by critics.
New Line Cinema is likely to be in search of a younger actor to play the part of the striped-sweater-wearing killer haunting the dreams of sleep-deprived teens.
The studio has already hired David Leslie Johnson, who did the screenplay for "Orphan" and "Wrath of the Titans," to write the script for the new reboot.
No plot details have been made available, and neither has a director been named for the new movie at present. Studio executives Dave Neustadter, Toby Emmerich and Walter Hamada will be overseeing the project for New Line Cinema.
"A Nightmare on Elm Street" was originally set in the fictional town of Springwood, Ohio, with a plot revolving around a group of teenagers who are stalked and murdered in their dreams. Subsequently it became their reality as they were chased by a melted-faced madman with blades for fingers.
Wes Craven, who created, wrote and directed the original movie, created a franchise that spanned nine films and grossed over $100 million at the box office. "A Nightmare on Elm Street" has spawned film novelizations, several comic book series, video games, and other merchandise.
