New Orleans Saints Work Out Free Agent Linebacker Lamarr Houston

The New Orleans Saints' issues on defense have been well-documented this season.

The Saints gave up 29 points in their week-one matchup against the Minnesota Vikings, and they didn't do any better this past Sunday when the New England Patriots scored 30 points against them in the first half en route to a 36–20 victory. They are giving up an average of 512.5 yards per game right now and that's the worst in the league.

The Saints will have to find a way to fix this problem if they want to finish the season with a respectable record, and it looks like they have been checking out a certain player who may give them a much-needed boost in defense.

According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the Saints have brought in former Chicago Bears outside linebacker Lamarr Houston for a workout recently.

Well, Houston is certainly a surprising option since he has struggled to stay healthy in the past few seasons. In fact, he was released by the Bears earlier this month after he suffered a knee injury in their final preseason game.

It wasn't a serious injury, but it's still a cause for concern. After all, this is a player who has torn his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) twice in the last three seasons.

Still, Houston can be a solid contributor if he stays healthy and the Saints will have to consider adding him to shore up their defense.

"New Orleans has started three rookies on defense this season. Cornerback Marshon Lattimore, safety Marcus Williams and linebacker Alex Anzalone. With so many young starters added to an already notoriously bad defense, speed bumps were to be expected by the Saints. Should Houston sign with New Orleans, he would likely either take Anzalone's spot in the starting lineup, or come onto the field in passing situations," Sporting News' Alec Brzezinski said in his column.
