New 'Power Rangers' Movie Takes a More Mature Route (VIDEO)
Since the new "Power Rangers" movie announced its official release date last August, the movie is reportedly shaping up for more mature audiences.
"Project Almanac" director Dean Israelite, who was announced to direct the upcoming "Power Rangers" movie, has revealed the popular early 90s children television series is taking a more mature turn on the big screen.
Israelite admitted the script for the movie appears to be a more contemporary and mature version of the TV series, but will retain its fun and playful take on adventure as its fans remember it.
With a January 2017 release date on the horizon pushed forward from Summer 2016, the big screen adaptation of the long-running television franchise has screenwriters Zack Stentz of "X-men: First Class" and Ashley Miller of "Thor" on board to pen the material.
In an interview with IGN, Israelite revealed the movie is currently undergoing "soft pre-production," with his team working on designing and reimagining the world of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
He also disclosed the movie will be taking audiences into a future never seen before in all its television shows.
A darker look at the film version was hinted at in March when music video director, Joseph Khan released an R-rated short "Power Rangers" film that was a tad more NSFW than fans expected. The 15-minute gritty "deboot" was considered a "fan film," and showed the Rangers chasing to do battle in a dark war zone.
While the actual "Power Rangers" film isn't indicated to be as dark as Khan's version, fans of the colorfully clad monster fighting team should expect a mature and contemporary tale targeted at an older audience.
No word has yet been released on whether the reboot will use the same origin story of high school teens gifted with special supersuits to protect the earth against monsters, robots, and other forces of evil, or go off into another premise entirely.
The "Power Rangers" is scheduled to hit theaters on January 13, 2017.
