New 'Red Sonja' Movie Coming as Start of New Heroine-Led Franchise

"Wonder Woman" did great at the box-office, and executives at Millenium Media are paying close attention. "Red Sonja" is getting a movie update as a result, hopefully jumpstarting a new comic book movie series with a strong female headliner.

Millenium Media is hoping that the red-haired fighter can lead her own franchise for the company in the same way that "Wonder Woman" has restarted the trend for heroic women. Avi Lerner and Joe Gatta have been tapped as the producers for the new project alongside Mark Canton and Courtney Solomon from Cinelou, as Deadline exclusively reports.

"We have been waiting for the right time for this remake," Lerner said, referring to their upcoming revamp of the 1985 movie "Red Sonja" starring Brigitte Nielsen as the titular character, alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger as Prince Kalidor.

"We have been waiting for the right time for this remake," Lerner said, referring to their upcoming revamp of the 1985 movie "Red Sonja" starring Brigitte Nielsen as the titular character, alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger as Prince Kalidor.

The first "Red Sonja" movie did not do well with critics, having been nominated for the Razzie Awards for Worst New Star and Worst Actress, according to IMDB. The original comic book material, however, looks more promising.

Besides, this could be their answer to DC Comic's top heroine. "With the success of 'Wonder Woman,' the audience has spoken. They want female heroes," Lerner observed.

Before her big-screen debut in 1985, "Red Sonja" was a comic book character originally created by Robert E. Howard and later adapted for comics by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith for Marvel. She first appeared in "Conan the Barbarian #23," posed as the female barbarian to Conan's male counterpart.

When the Conan TV series was at its height, Red Sonja also had a brief appearance in it, as played by Angelica Bridges.

This upcoming movie adaptation will be an entirely original story, with more details expected to come next year. Millenium Media is currently fast-tracking this project as they now search for a suitable writer.
