New York Yankees News: Yankees to Miss Out on Pineda After Injury
Despite only being 26 years old, Michael Pineda has been through a number of injuries throughout his career. He's now back in the disabled list after experiencing tightness around the forearm area.
The New York Yankees pitcher was reported to have suffered the injury late in July and now team general manager Brian Cashman confirmed the issue, going as far as saying that Pineda may be out for the foreseeable future.
According to Cashman, they expect Pineda to return to action around September.
The right-handed pitcher does not boast very impressive numbers throughout the board, but he is most impressive with his 7.80 strikeout-to-walk ratio – which is the best in the American League.
Currently earning around $2.1 million, Pineda's contract will expire at the end of the year and his health may be a big factor in deciding whether the organization will go on to give him a new deal, or the pitcher will try to ply his trade elsewhere.
The Yankees are enjoying a surprisingly good season and lead the American League – East with a 60-45 record.
They are 7-3 in their last 10 games and their most recent outing resulted in a whopping 13-3 win over bitter rivals Boston Red Sox.
Despite the absence of Pineda, the Yankees' pitching is being carried by the likes of CC Sabathia, Masahiro Tanaka and Nathan Eovaldi.
With the Yankees continuing their push to make the playoffs, they will need Pineda's pitching to overcome teams.
If Cashman's timeline goes as planned, then Pineda may return just before the start of the playoffs – giving him enough time to get some pitches in and get a rhythm to be used at the best time of the season.
Hopefully he can continue his improvement with his health as he enters the prime of his career.
