NFL Trade Rumors: Johnny Manziel Draws Interest from NFL Teams
Johnny Manziel is back. Well, not exactly. Not yet anyway. But he wants another shot in the National Football League (NFL). Throughout his career in the pros, Manziel has made headlines for all the wrong reasons. His tenure with the Cleveland Browns was plagued with off-field controversies and inconsistent play. But before everyone writes him off as a troublemaker, Manziel is ready to mount a serious comeback attempt.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport has reported that Manziel's old agent, Erik Burkhardt, has agreed to take him back. Rapoport also said Manziel's drawing some interest from teams at the scouting combine this week.
A lot of football enthusiast are probably having a hard time believing teams are actually turning their heads to give Manziel another look, Yahoo Sports' Frank Schwab couldn't believe it either.
"To think teams suddenly believe in Manziel again because he got an agent to work with him again is ignoring ... well, everything else," he said in his report.
Manziel has a lot of detractors, but he also has a handful of supporters like Hall of Fame wide receiver Cris Carter. Carter overcame addiction during his career and he believes that Manziel deserves another chance.
"Yes, NFL teams should be interested in Johnny Manziel, for a number of reasons. The No. 1 reason is that there's 64 backups in the NFL. You've got 32 starters, most team have at least two backups. Are there 64 better quarterbacks than Johnny Manziel in the world? No. And that's just a pure breakdown of the numbers," he said on Fox Sports.
Manziel is obviously talented. He won the Heisman Trophy in 2012, so he definitely has the skills. However, people tend to overlook his potential because of his off-field issues. If Tim Tebow is the shoulder angel, Manziel is probably the perfect shoulder devil. He has to get rid of the image if he wants people to take him seriously.
