Nintendo Switch News: Latest Update Adds GameCube Support to Console
The latest update for the Nintendo Switch has officially added something that gamers have been looking forward to — support for GameCube controllers.
Since Nintendo has not revealed the tweaks made in the patch in a changelog, the "secret feature" was only discovered by the folks over at GameXplain.
Players will need the GameCube controller to make use of the Nintendo Switch tweak, the one that was released for "Super Smash Bros" for the Wii U.
When it is connected to the console, it will be detected as a USB. It will work on basically any game available on the Nintendo Switch although of course players lose access on the ZL and home button.
This nifty feature has GameXplain hoping that the GameCube titles will be added to the Virtual Console, which is something that Nintendo deputy general manager Yoshiaki Koizumi hinted was possible early this year:
We cannot really answer with precision because we have not announced anything about it at this time. I can tell you is that we are working on things that go in that direction.
General manager Shinya Takahashi also suggested how the GameCube could be integrated in the Nintendo Switch including possible controller attachments, which seem to be what they are building up on doing in this new update for the console.
GameXplain also has many hopeful about "Super Smash Bros" coming to the Nintendo Switch, which is expected to find its way to the console in the future seeing as how huge of a franchise it is.
Per Eurogamer, the GameCube version of the melee game was one of the titles being considered to be made backward-compatible on the Nintendo console.
This did not pan out though, at least not yet, as the company decided to focus on building a big lineup for the first year of the Nintendo Switch's release.
