Nintendo Switch Sells 1.5 Million Units in First Week

The sales figure for the Nintendo Switch has just hit the 1.5 million mark, according to reports. This landmark figure counts all the sales for the new console from worldwide sales, and covers the first week since the launch of the Nintendo Switch.

The report by Games Industry was one of the first to break out the news that Nintendo's newest console has just exceeded 1.5 million in sales in its first week, according to the international sales recorded and tallied by Famitsu, a prominent Japanese gaming news publication and GfK, a global market research institute based in Germany. The numbers from these sources was compiled into a report by the interactive media research group SuperData which forms the basis for the 1.5 worldwide sales figure, according to Polygon.

Looking at the sales figure of the Nintendo Switch at a couple of countries, 500,000 consoles have already been sold in the United States, while 360,000 units account for the sales numbers in Japan. According to SuperData as reported by Games Industry, the figure for Europe "isn't far behind" — the United Kingdom has tallied 85,000 consoles sold, and France has bought 110,000 units of Nintendo Switch as of their last count.

The factor that will affect these sales figures in the long term will be the games, according to the assessment of Ars Technica. While the lineup of games for the new console has not been too comprehensive so far, the number of "AAA" titles, games that can sway a potential buyer into purchasing the console just for those titles, are still sorely lacking.

Right now, it is "Zelda: Breath of the Wild" that could be driving a majority of the Nintendo Switch sales. According to SuperData, 89% of the new Switch owners have also bought the new "Zelda" title — in other words, almost nine out of ten Switch owners have bought "Zelda: Breath of the Wild" with their new Nintendo console.
