Nissan Recalls 250,000 Cars Over Fire Hazard Problems

A Nissan recall will affect nearly 250,000 vehicles worldwide over a potential fire hazard with certain models' fuel sensor.

The huge Nissan recall will affect a variety of models both in the U.S. and abroad. The Nissan Juke of Japan and Britain, Nissan Serena of Japan, Nissan Patrol, Infiniti M and QX, the Nissan Tiida of China, and the Nissan Micra of India were identified as the cars with possible problems, according to reports.

Nissan, one of the largest automakers in the world, found that a problem with the fuel sensor presented a fire hazard issue. The fuel rail pressure sensor on some of their vehicles may not be tightened sufficiently, resulting in trouble for direct injection engines. If the sensor were to leak, it could spill fuel inside the car, which could potentially cause flames in extreme cases.

The recall though, is purely precautionary, according to the manufacturer. No incidents or injuries have been reported among any of the recalled models, but Nissan isn't taking any chances.

Of all the recalls, many of them were in Japan - the car company's headquarters and an overwhelming majority of their factories are located in the island nation. The 249,522-car recall involves 92,679 models in Japan.

Nissan also had another recall recently, announced in December of 2011. 2010 and 2011 Sentra models had a problem with the battery that could cause the cars to stall.

The recall has only affected vehicles equipped with MR20 engines and includes Sentras built between May 11 and May 22, 2010 or between July 8 and October 25, 2010. Almost 34,000 Sentras were subject to the recall.

In addition, the Japanese automaker had another recall earlier in the month, announced Dec. 15. Once again, the Nissan Juke was found to have problems.

28,000 Nissans were recalled for a faulty turbocharger sensor bracket. This recall had effect on 2011 models of Juke SUVs with turbocharger-equipped engines made from April 2010 to May 2011.

It is unknown how much this most recent recall will cost Nissan.
