As the top seed, North Carolina showed why they were given that distinction as they dominated Florida Gulf Coast in the first round.

The game was tight after the first round as the Tar Heels only had a one-point lead by halftime and they were being given a real scare by the underdogs.

However, coming out of the locker room to start the second half, the Tar Heels came out with aggression and a winning mentality that helped them score 42 points in the second part, while holing Florida Gulf Coast to only 27.

In the win, five North Carolina players scored in double figures led by Brice Johnson who had 18 points. He shot 7 of 11 from the field and had seven rebounds in 32 minutes.

Joel Berry II had 14 points in the game, while Justin Jackson and Isaiah Hicks helped out with 12 each.

On the other hand, Providence had a stroke of luck and a calm demeanour by Rodney Bullock as they squeezed by the University of Southern California 70-69.

They were challenged the entire game but Bullock had a great layup late in the game to give the Friars the lead and they would eventually hold on to get the victory in spectacular fashion.

Bullock finished with a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Ben Bentil led the team in scoring with 19 points despite shooting 7 of 21 from the field.
