Not Everyone is Sold on an Awkwardly Dark Batman v Superman Film
Every superhero movie fan couldn't ask for a much better flick than this one – an anticipated blockbuster pitting two of the most recognizable and widely known superheroes in the history of entertainment: Batman and Superman. But as intriguing as the title is, Zach Snyder's latest work seems to be getting bad reviews.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is a super film without the super positive reviews. The web was flooded with reviews right after many of them started appearing last Tuesday, and by the looks of it, there is little to be excited about this rather dark and awkwardly serious film. Rotten Tomatoes, for instance, has given it an initial rating of 35%, which is pretty low even for something that is expected to be criticized a lot for the costs of filming.
Two top movie review sites, Entertainment Weekly and Time joined the bandwagon. Entertainment Weekly for instance called it "all too familiar," something which is disappointing considering the fact that there was some kind of shift in the trend of how superhero movies usually start. Time on the other hand had a harsher take, saying that "it's so top-heavy with false portent that it buckles under its own weight."
At least the Chicago Sun-Times and Rolling Stone had something good to say about it. "When it sings, Dawn of Justice is a wonder. When it drags, it still looks good and offers hints of a better scene just around the corner," the Chicago Sun-Times wrote. For Rolling Stone, the film is described as better than the Man of Steel but cannot be in the same level to that of the Dark Knight.
But as history would tell us, these online reviews do carry some weight as to how moviegoers will react to what they're about to see. However, no matter how bad reviews can be, the thing is everyone is still going to see it.
