Chinese Official's $65,000 Contract for Mistress Backfires, Bureaucrat Fired Over Illicit Affair
An official's $65,000 contract with his mistress managed to get him fired and have his name publicly shamed, according to reports. Guo Shuanglong, a municipal environmental protection official in the Chinese province of Shanxi, gave his lover 400,000 yuan to leave him and his family alone.
The official's $65,000 contract came into play because Shuanglong suddenly decided to dump his longtime mistress in July of 2013. The mistress wasn't willing to go quietly though, instead deciding to escalate things and make him sign a contract. The unnamed woman stalked the municipal official, harassed him, and even stalked his family as well, Quartz reported.
Finally, Shuanglong relented and signed a "termination contract" in August of 2014. The document stated that for 400,000 yuan (US$65,100), the scorned mistress would leave him and his family alone and keep her distance forever. The contract was signed by another Chinese government bureaucrat in Shanxi.
The woman's revenge wasn't yet complete, however. She took the termination contract to the Beijing News as proof of Shuanglong's corruption: it was plainly spelled out in the contract for all to see. It looked terrible as well because 400,000 yuan is more than three times the annual salary for the President of China Xi Jinping.
Guo Shuanglong was promptly fired once the news broke, and the witness that signed the contract was fired as well.
President Jinping has vowed to stamp out corruption in the government, which is why Shuanglong and various other officials have been fired recently. An emergency meeting is being held to replace some of the bureaucrats, and special elections will be held Sept. 28.
