"Once Upon A Time" Season 5 Spoilers: Emma Becomes the Dark One; Flashbacks Will Be Key

The ABC fairy tale TV drama series "Once Upon A Time" has officially returned with an explosive season premiere last September 27. The season's first episode has set the tone for the rest of the season, which will see Storybrooke and its cast of characters dealing with the transformation of the town's savior, Emma, into the Dark One. According to a report in Hollywood Life, Emma's switch to the dark side will impact all her relationships with other characters in the series, but most especially those who are close to her such as her family and friends.

The report also rounded up some of the major story points for the upcoming season, which mainly mentioned the characters that will be appearing and playing a major part in this season's story. According to the report, one of these characters will be Merlin, who in the premiere was shown as the one who caught a young Emma stealing a candy bar. His backstory will be explored in this season, as he seems to have known early on how Emma will be affected by her dark side.

Emma's switch to the dark side will also affect her parents' relationship. According to the report, this season will have Snow White and Prince Charming dealing with the aftermath of their daughter's transformation, most especially on their marriage.

As for the other characters in the series, Emma's son Henry is going to be smitten with someone this season. Episode two will reveal who this will be, while the characters are still back in Camelot. The Wicked Witch of the West, Zelena, will figure prominently during the season. The report also mentioned that her baby may be making an appearance as well.

Returning characters this season include Mulan and Red Riding Hood and viewers will find out what happened to them since the last time they appeared. Interestingly, Mulan will have a love interest this season.

According to another report in Variety, flashbacks will be crucial this season as revealed by the show's producers. This season will feature the main characters jumping from present-time Storybrooke to ancient time Camelot as it tries to piece together what happened in the six weeks before Emma's transformation.
