'Once Upon a Time' Season 7 Cast, Spoilers: Creators Talk New Villain, Hyperion Heights, a New Mystery & Emma's 'Emotional Curtain Call'
With its new cast of characters and setting, "Once Upon A Time" season 7 will mark the end of an era for both the fairytale folks fans came to know and love within the series and the actual setup of the show.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, series co-creators Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz pointed out that the new season, despite starting anew — being the result of a soft reboot — will be very different from the first season as some fans believe.
While like in the freshman run, "Once Upon a Time" season 7 will see the new set of characters deal with a curse, the matter of who cast it will be shrouded a mystery.
Kitsis explained:
We said very clearly in the pilot of "Once Upon A Time" that Regina (Lana Parrilla) cast the curse, but what you will see this season is we don't necessarily say that in the premiere.
Horowitz continued:
So there are mysteries to be solved. What we hope for the audience is when they come in that hopefully we signal right away, and they accept it, is we're not redoing season 1. There will be elements that are familiar that will echo it, but we're hoping to take a left turn where we took a right this time.
Another difference they noted is that not like Regina from the first season, the next season's big bad Lady Tremaine (Gabrielle Anwar) is not looking to trap everyone in one place but "gentrify the neighborhood" and separate the characters forever.
"Once Upon a Time" season 7 will be set in a new location called Hyperion Heights, which, unlike the isolated small town-type Storybrooke, is part of a city and is home to both fairytale and non-fairytale characters. Kitsis noted that it will "much more reflect the world we're living in today."
So for the first time in the show, we're really seeing our fairy tale characters in the mix with real people, so there's an element of, who is a fairy tale character, who isn't a fairy tale character.
As for Emma's (Jennifer Morrison) story, the creators said that the premiere will reveal "what has happened with Emma and Hook (Colin O'Donoghue) since our happy ending we showed last year" and how it relates to the situation in Hyperion Heights.
Kitsis and Horowitz tease of the end of the Savior's story in "Once Upon a Time" season 7:
We will be getting closure on her story in what we feel is a satisfying way...I think it's an emotional curtain call.
"Once Upon a Time" season 7 premieres Friday, Oct. 6, on ABC.
