Oprah Winfrey on Las Vegas Shooting: 'Appreciate the Ordinariness of Our Days'

Making an appearance as a guest on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" this week, Oprah Winfrey expressed her grief over the recent tragedy that took place in Las Vegas.

On Sunday, there was a mass shooting that took the lives of more than 50 people and left 500 with injuries. Winfrey opened up to DeGeneres about what she thinks of the tragedy that has affected the nation greatly.

"I think about everybody who went to that concert the other night," the 63-year-old talk show host and philanthropist said, as reported by People. "It was just an ordinary day and how excited everybody was to be out in the open air and be at that concert. Then they didn't come home," she added.

Recalling the events of the 9/11 tragedy, wherein the Islamic extremist group, al-Qaeda, hijacked aircrafts and carried out suicide attacks, killing thousands of innocents, Winfrey reminded everyone to appreciate the ordinary things in life. She thought about all those victims going about their day as usual until their lives were unexpectedly taken away from them.

"So, it helps us to — this is a reminder to all of us — to appreciate the ordinariness of our days because that's what makes life extraordinary," she added.

Winfrey also praised DeGeneres for being able to lift their viewers' spirits despite what America, or the world, has been going through lately. Thanking the host for making everybody feel better, she said that there are many different ways of teaching and healing, and that includes spreading positivity through a talk show.

Meanwhile, the interview also included a pre-recorded clip, in which DeGeneres and Winfrey went grocery shopping. The latter was heard admitting that it was her first time to be in a grocery store since last year's Thanksgiving.

Keeping up with the light tone of the show, DeGeneres brought in large Louis Vuitton "grocery bags" for them to shop in, adding some humor to the concept of being eco-friendly shoppers.

Earlier this week, DeGeneres also shared her pain towards the Las Vegas shooting.

"My heart is broken for everyone affected by what happened," she reportedly said on her show, a day after the incident. "We were just in Las Vegas a few weeks ago and when you think of Las Vegas, it's a place to escape and have fun and you never imagine anything like this could ever happen," DeGeneres went on to say.
