Original 'System Shock' Producer Warren Spector Returns as Studio Director for 'System Shock 3'

Developer Otherside Entertainment looks bent on resuscitating the "System Shock" series with the addition of Warren Spector, who was the producer of the original "System Shock" game many years ago. Otherside Entertainment announced through a press release that Spector will join the company as a studio director.

"When the opportunity to have a bigger role in bringing Underworld Ascendant to life, as well as playing in the System Shock universe once again, helping to bring these games to a 21st century audience, I just couldn't say no," Spector said. "Working on System Shock was one of the most fulfilling things I've done in my career and it's hard to describe how much I'm looking forward to sharing with players what SHODAN has been up to since the last game was released."

In addition to "System Shock," he is known for working on "Deus Ex," "Thief," and "Epic Mickey." After "Epic Mickey," Spector entered the academia. In the University of Texas Austin, he was involved with the Denuis-Sam Gaming Academy post-baccalaureate program. He didn't leave gaming behind entirely though, as he served as a creative advisor for the studio. Now, he'll be leaving the academia to focus full time on the creation of "System Shock 3." Development on the game is expected to "accelerate" this year.

Otherside Entertainment confirmed "System Shock 3" in December 2015 through a teaser site. The much-awaited sequel is still in its early stages so there's barely any information about it right now. However, Spector told Wired that they'll be taking the game in "a different direction than Looking Glass would have, had that series continued." Specifically, he describes the upcoming title's gameplay as different from a linear first-person shooter.

The publication also reports that a Kickstarter campaign for "System Shock 3" might possibly be started in the future.

"System Shock 3" is expected to continue the tale of the A.I. Shodan and the hacker who built it.
