Oscar De La Hoya urges Floyd Mayweather to "bury the hatchet"
"The Golden Boy" Oscar De La Hoya is waving the white flag at long-time business and boxing rival Floyd Mayweather Jr.
The six-division world champion has been at odds with "Money May" for almost a decade now, beginning from their 2007 fight. Both men had been incessantly trying to get into each other's nerves throughout the fight build-up.
Unfortunately for De La Hoya, he was still unable to get the better of Mayweather, as he lost the actual fight by split decision.
The two also had a falling out business-wise when Mayweather decided to cut ties with Golden Boy Promotions in June 2014. The two had been working together since 2007.
Recently De La Hoya decided to write an "open letter" to Mayweather. In it were supposedly all of his thoughts about Mayweather, his fighting style and career.
"Let's face it: You were boring. Just take a look at your most recent performance, your last hurrah in the ring, a 12-round decision against Andre Berto," an excerpt of the letter reads. "How to describe it? A bust? A disaster? A snooze fest? An affair so one-sided that on one judge's card Berto didn't win a single round? Everyone in boxing knew Berto didn't have a chance."
Mayweather responded by pointing at the jealousy angle on De La Hoya's part.
"I think he's jealous – jealous. The thing is this, I mean, you see Richard Schaefer is gone. Richard Schaefer built Golden Boy."
"I'm just saying if Miguel Cotto was my fighter, if Canelo was my fighter, they'd be a lot bigger than they are now," he added.
The tides seemed to have turned soon after, when De La Hoya suddenly called for a truce. Speaking to Boxingscene.com, the Golden Boy Promotions head honcho wants to "bury the hatchet for the sake of the sport."
"Keep doing what you're doing, I applaud you. I'm doing what I'm doing. Let's come together," De La Hoya said. "Maybe down the road we can work together. Imagine that. Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions. We'll bring in the Bobfather."
"Maybe we'll bring Don King out of retirement," he continued. "Maybe we'll do a Super Bowl of boxing. Floyd, let's bury the hatchet, sincerely."
