'Outlander' Season 2 News, Cast, Spoilers: Jamie's Rape Scene May Not Happen Again

The return of "Outlander" season 2 is highly anticipated by fans. With many clinging to the story line in Diana Gabaldon's novels, it's also quite known that the series had chosen to take some turns and delve away from what was written. Although the Starz show may have started to take on different plots, it seems that Gabaldon is still involved in the TV adaptation.

One of the scenes that had shocked viewers in the previous season was the rape scene between Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies) and Jamie (Sam Heughan), with Black Jack initiating the brutal sexual encounter. According to Gabaldon, the upcoming season will definitely shed some light on what has transpired between the two.

In a Radio Times interview, she shares why this scene even happened in the first place, "It occurs as a very integral part of the plot. They filmed those scenes pretty much straight out of the book — the scenes in the prison and so forth." Although she hasn't confirmed whether the rape scene will trigger the same series of events in the show as it did in the book, Gabaldon did further add how this moment was a crucial one for the novels. She goes, "In the book, it builds this conflict, which is actually a triangle, you might say, amongst Claire, Jamie and Black Jack Randall. You see it developing — the dimensions and aspects — through the entire story!"

Furthermore, according to the author, she believes that one of the things that sets aside the rape scene from those that have occurred in other shows like "Game of Thrones" is the fact that it is "in no way gratuitous." Perhaps this intention has been well received by the audience as it has been received far better than others, even being praised.

"Outlander" season 2 is set to return on March 2016 on Starz.
