'Outlander' Season 2 News, Spoilers: Caitriona Balfe on Mary Hawkins' Future Marriage, 'Dangerous' St. Germain, Actress Claire Sermonne
The previous episode of "Outlander," titled "Useful Occupations and Deceptions," found the Duke of Sandringham (Simon Callow) once again threatening Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie's (Sam Heughan) relationship.
In the episode, Jamie discovered that the Duke is one of several English aristocrats funding Prince Charles (Andrew Gower). The discovery means that the Highland warrior will soon have to come face-to-face with the Duke, and when he does, he will undoubtedly uncover the dark secret Claire has been keeping from him: that Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies), the sadist who tortured and raped him back in season 1, is still alive.
In a recent chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Balfe spoke about why Claire has been keeping this secret from Jamie, what her realization about Mary Hawkins (Rosie Day) means, and how Claire's conflict with a "dangerous" foe will escalate in future episodes.
According to the actress, Claire has been keeping the knowledge that Black Jack is still alive to herself because she is scared that Jamie will do something "rash" when he finds out. Though Claire is unsure how Jamie will react, she fears that the revelation will send her husband into a downward spiral.
As for her discovery that Mary and Black Jack are destined to be the ancestors of her 20th century husband Frank (also Tobias Menzies), Balfe said, "When she finds out that Mary Hawkins is supposed to marry Black Jack, she realizes or she believes that then, Jamie can't kill him because unless they reach that date and have a child, then Frank won't exist."
"Maybe she won't exist," the actress added. "Maybe what would have happened won't happen. There's a lot that hinges on the fact that Mary Hawkins and Black Jack will marry."
Balfe also hinted at the growing conflict between Claire and Comte St. Germain (Stanley Weber), saying that episode seven will see the hostility between the two reach a boiling point. According to the actress, St. Germain is Claire's foe in season 2 and that he is a "very dark" character.
"We will find out later just how dark he is," she said. "Claire isn't fully aware yet how dangerous he is but she's starting to."
As for the other people Claire has been interacting with in Paris, Balfe recently spoke to Access Hollywood about the French-Russian actress Claire Sermonne, who plays Madame Louise de Rohan in the current season of "Outlander." According to Balfe, Sermonne is a "brilliant" actress who has played both sides of her character "beautifully."
Sermonne, meanwhile, also spoke about working with Balfe, saying, "She's such a deep person and very, very kind."
"Outlander" airs Saturdays at 9 p.m. ET on Starz.
