'Outlander' Season 2 News: New Season Lands on our Screens April 9

Starz recently announced that the much-anticipated second season of its popular American-British period drama will premiere in the United States on Saturday, April 9. The new season of "Outlander" consists of 13 episodes and is based upon the historical time-travel novel "Dragonfly in Amber," the second installment in best-selling author Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" series.

The second season of "Outlander" sees main stars Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe), a World War II nurse, and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan), a Highland warrior, heading to France and attempting to alter the course of history by entering the world of Parisian high society and politics and trying to put a stop to the impending Battle of Culloden.

Similarly, the second novel in Gabaldon's "Outlander" series has Claire and Jamie arriving in France and thereafter infiltrating the Jacobite rebellion led by Prince Charles Stuart (Andrew Gower), in hopes of preventing the battle that would kill thousands and destroy the Scottish people. With the help of Jamie's cousin, Jared (Robert Cavanah), a Jacobite and wine merchant living in Paris, the two make their foray into French society, where they find that lavish parties and society intrigues are abundant, but political power is hard to come by.

Two major characters will be introduced in season 2. Fans of the series will finally meet Claire and Jamie's daughter, Brianna Randall, who will be played by British actress Sophie Skelton. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actress is set to play an adult version of Brianna, a character who is described in the "Outlander" novels as an intelligent but stubborn redheaded woman.

Another newcomer, Richard Rankin, was cast in December 2015 in the role of Roger Wakefield, the adopted son of Reverend Reginald Wakefield (James Fleet). As an adult, Roger meets Brianna and later on plays an important role in her life, as well as in those of Claire and Jamie.

The second season of "Outlander" premieres on April 9 on Starz.
