Overwatch Latest News & Update: New Map Eichenwalde Has a German Castle; Competitive Mode Changes [DETAILS]
New Map Eichenwalde Goes Live Next Month on 'Overwatch'
"Overwatch" players will have a new battleground this September.
The new map called Eichenwalde was announced by game developer Blizzard at Gamescom 2016. The most striking feature of the new map is the presence of a big German castle. They also revealed that Eichenwalde is "Overwatch" character Bastion's birthplace.
'Overwatch' Map Eichenwalde Details
Looking at the map name, Eichenwalde is located in Germany. The announcement couldn't come at a better time as it was announced by Blizzard during Gamescom 2016, an annual event held in Cologne, Germany.
Blizzard also stated that Eichenwalde is where "Overwatch" hero Bastion was born, Polygon reports. In the map preview, it was also shown that there are scattered Bastion robots and parts all over the castle. This makes sense when the official description of the map says that it is:
"The site of one of the most famous battles during the Omnic Crisis, it was here that the leader of the Crusaders, Balderich von Alder, and a handful of his best soldiers made a last stand against an advancing automaton army," Blizzard wrote in an accompanying video trailer. "Outnumbered and outgunned, they were ultimately slain during the resulting combat. However, thanks to their valiant efforts, the German military was able to push back the omnic offensive and win the fight."
"Overwatch" players can expect to use the Eichenwalde map for "Escort" and "Assault" game modes. It was also described by Blizzard as "vertical" in contrast to most "Overwatch" maps that are horizontal. The map is expected to go live in the game on September 2016, Business Insider reports.
'Overwatch' Animated Short: 'The Last Bastion'
With the announcement and reveal of the new "Overwatch" map, Eichenwalde, Blizzard will also be releasing a new animated short called "The Last Bastion." Blizzard wrote on their blog that the animated short will reveal more about the roots of the robot Bastion and how he came to be.
He was originally lying dormant in the forest for more than ten years. He reactivated out of nowhere and not much was known since he became an "Overwatch" hero. Hopefully, the animated short will provide the answers.
"The Last Bastion" animated short will set to premier on August 18 at 18:00 CEST or 9 a.m. PT exclusively at Gamescom 2016. It can also be watched online at gamescom.blizzard.com.
