'Overwatch' News: 2 New Characters Revealed, Beta to Start Late 2015
Blizzard Entertainment's only first person shooter multiplayer game "Overwatch" has yet to get a release date, but that doesn't stop the developers from revealing new characters and new features of the upcoming game and making demos available at game conferences such as the recently concluded PAX East.
According to gaming sites, the game's beta is due to start this autumn, without a definite release date in sight.
Blizzard Entertainment is known for action role-playing games such as the "Diablo" series and strategy games such as "Warcraft" and "Starcraft." "Overwatch" is Blizzard's latest original game in development after the "Diablo" and "Warcraft." The upcoming game, according to Digital Spy is "a team-based multiplayer shooter and Blizzard's first all-new property in 17 years."
"Overwatch" as described in the game's IGN wiki, is "an elite international task force charged with ending the war and restoring liberty to all nations."
Prior to the game's beta, the company revealed two new characters who will part of the "Overwatch" team of characters. The first one is a gunslinger named McCree and the game's "first female tank" called Zarya. McCree is fashioned after a cowboy and according to Polygon, "he uses a Peacemaker handgun and has abilities that include the ability to reload during a roll, toss a flashbang attack of sorts, and deadeye, which slowly locks in all visible targets."
Zarya, on the other hand, is Blizzard's response to a call for more diverse characters. Zarya is not the typical game heroine with a slim body and a catsuit. She is a championship weight lifter who decided to join the fight to protect humanity. Her weapon is a particle cannon that either "shoot a short stream or lob explosives." She can also create a Gravity Well which "sucks all enemies on screen in a single spot." These new characters join 12 characters who were introduced earlier on.
The Polygon report also talks about a new map called Watchpoint Gibraltar, which is "both a new play space for players, but also a map that provides a touch of insight into the game's backstory."
The game is being developed for PC, for both Windows and OS X devices. The company has not divulged if console versions are being developed as well.
