'Pacific Rim 2' Finally Back on Track: New Release Date and Story Updates

The Fight Between the Kaiju and Humanity Continues

After a slew of delays, "Pacific Rim 2" is finally on schedule as Legendary has officially placed back the movie on their official calendar. Originally, "Pacific Rim 2" was scheduled for an April 7, 2017 release date. However, it was then pushed back to Aug. 4, 2017 until it was taken off the calendar all together.

Legendary gave serveral reasons for the film's removal from their schedule, but now, the studio has given "Pacific Rim 2" a release date of Feb. 23, 2018. The new release date can be seen as a safe bet as no major blockbusters are set to open that weekend. However, that could change as the date gets nearer.

The original protagonists of "Pacific Rim" were Idris Ebla and Charlie Hunnam. However, with the apparent death of Elba's character, Stacker Pentecost, in the first film, a new protagonist was needed.

To play this new protagonist, it has been confirmed that John Boyega of "Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens" has been casted. It is still unknown what type of role Boyega will be playing in the sequel.

The Kaiju Returns

The main villains in the original film were the alien-like monsters named Kaiju that came out of nowhere. At the end of the first film, it was thought that the portal that led the Kaiju to Earth was closed. However, it seems that the closed portal is just one of the many portals around the world.

It will be up to the remaining heroes and their Jaeger robots to close the other portals before it is too late.

Will 'Pacific Rim 2' Have the Same Numbers in China Again?

The biggest problem that the first "Pacific Rim" had is its poor performance domestically. However, because of the film's large sales in China, "Pacific Rim" was able to gross $411 million in ticket sales.

It was one of the rare occasions that the international numbers nearly tripled that of domestic numbers. The franchise also has this problem with the "Warcraft" movie, which has currently earned around $300 million, with most of the sales done in China.

Currently, Legendary is planning on releasing "Pacific Rim 2" in both IMAX and 3D. Steve DeKnight has replaced Guilermo del Toro as director of the film, with the latter still staying on as a producer.
