'Pacific Rim 2' news: Setbacks cause production delays
News has emerged "Pacific Rim 2" production has been delayed due to setbacks, pushing the film off schedule.
"Pacific Rim 2," the highly anticipated sequel to the 2013 Guillermo del Toro sci-fi monster action movie, is said to be experiencing setbacks in its production, pushing filming back to next year instead of November as originally planned.
Titled "Pacific Rim: Maelstrom," the sequel was due to begin initial production in two months at Pinewood Studios in Toronto, with director del Torro saying the second movie is on a fast lane to start filming.
However, due to unforeseen interruptions, Legendary Pictures has announced it was postponing production to 2016, without disclosing what month "Maelstrom" will begin filming.
No information has yet been released as to what caused the delay, but the setback is unlikely to affect the sequel's original release date in 2017.
Del Torro has long spoken about a follow-up film even before the first movie premiered in theaters. The gestating project was finally confirmed in November 2014, and will be set years after the events of the last film, with humanity struggling to rebuild in the aftermath of the Kaiju invasions.
Del Torro has said he is planning on injecting a tremendous storyline focusing on the fate of the Jaegers after the Kaiju war has ended, as well as a deeper look into the history of Kaijus and where they came from. The "Hellboy" movies director also confirmed there would be an epic battle at the end of the sequel, which is speculated to lead to a third movie in the trilogy.
Reports have further emerged the Jaeger robots and the Kaijus have been undergoing a massive redesign in time for the sequel, with their clashes planned to the last detail.
"Pacific Rim: Maelstrom" is scheduled to premiere in theaters on August 4, 2017.
