'Pacific Rim 2' Release Date, Plot, Cast News: Director Steven DeKnight Unveils 'Pacific Rim' Sequel Logo

Following the release of the first official look at John Boyega as Jake Pentecost in "Pacific Rim: Uprising," director Steven S. DeKnight has unveiled the official logo for the upcoming film. While the logo does not reveal much about the plot of the sequel, it hints that the film will never fall short of action.

Without offering any further details about the project, DeKnight posted on Instagram the official logo of the film. This came just a few days after the poster of the new Jaeger robots was unveiled, wherein one of the robots resembles the Gipsy Danger from the first "Pacific Rim" movie.

The new logo is almost the same as the logo of the original film, only that the slash of fire has been moved from behind the word "Pacific" to the space in between "Pacific" and "Rim."

As for its cast, cinematographer Dan Mindel previously posted an Instagram photo which somewhat hints at who among the original characters are returning for the sequel. The list included original "Pacific Rim" cast members Rinko Kikuchi (Mako Mori), Burn Gorman (Gottlieb), Charlie Day (Newton Geisler), and rumored new cast member, Karl Urban.

Last summer, it was confirmed that original "Pacific Rim" star Charlie Hunnam will no longer reprise his role as Jaeger pilot Raleigh Beckett, but he said he was excited about the upcoming sequel.

The original "Pacific Rim" film earned $411 million worldwide and $101 million in the U.S. Its sequel was given the green light following Dalian Wanda Group's acquisition of a majority stake in Legendary Pictures.

"Pacific Rim: Uprising" is set to hit theaters on Feb. 23, 2018. Although it does not have a direct film to compete with on that date, its premiere comes between the release of Marvel's "Black Panther" and Warner Bros.' shark thriller, "Meg."
