Paul Thomas Anderson to Pen Robert Downey's 'Pinocchio' Remake

Another live-action adaptation of a classic children's tale is gearing up to move from early development to actual development. "Pinocchio" is getting a live-action film courtesy of Robert Downey, Jr. and Warner Bros. They recently added Paul Thomas Anderson, known for his work in "There Will Be Blood" and "Inherent Vice," to write the film's screenplay.

According to a report in The Guardian, Anderson is working on an earlier script previously written by Michael Mitnick, who also penned "The Giver." Robert Downey, Jr. who is also involved as a producer, is said to have made his own tweaks to the script as well for the Warner Bros. studio. Anderson has worked with Downey previously.

Aside from writing the script, the report also mentioned the possibility of Anderson helming the movie. Most of Anderson's projects usually involve him as writer and director. It will be the first project that he will do for a younger audience. The movie was supposed to have been directed by Tim Burton, but he is no longer attached to it as he will be working on Disney Studios' live-action "Dumbo" remake.

Downey is also cast to play Geppetto in the remake. According to the report, it will be a "traditional adaptation of the story" which is based on the 1883 novel by Carlo Collodi titled "The Adventures of Pinocchio." Disney's version of the tale was an animated movie that came out in 1940.

Disney, on the other hand, is developing its own live-action version of the movie, with Peter Hedges writing the script. The Disney version is said to be based on the 1940 animated movie, according to a report in Variety. They have a lot of live-action adaptations lined up for development. Warner Bros. is set to compete with Disney with Pinocchio and another version of "The Jungle Book."

Guillermo del Toro is also said to be working on a "darker version" of "Pinocchio" using stop-motion 3-D animation.
