Pepsi Smartphone: Drinks Company Planning Smartphone Pepsi P1

As far as everyone knows, Pepsi Co. is in the business of selling carbonated soft drinks. But it seems like they're going out of the food and beverage box and taking a step into the tech world as reports say that the company is planning to launch its own line of smartphones.

According to EconoTimes, Pepsi Co has recently announced that that it will sell Android smartphones and accessories in China. It was first reported early in October by tech blogging site Mobipicker and appeared in the company's official Weibo page.

But a spokesperson for the company eventually confirmed via Tech Radar that Pepsi Co. is indeed in the works of launching a handset. "We are pleased to share that Pepsi is working with a licensing partner to bring a line of mobile phones and accessories to market in China in the next few months."

As cited in multiple reports, the company is releasing a mid-range smartphone dubbed as the Pepsi P1. Sources say that it may be released this coming Oct. 20 in Beijing and will be branded with the Pepsi logo. The handset will also be just like the other licensed products it has across the world and is reported to cost only $205. For such a price, Chinese consumers can expect the smartphone to be nothing too fancy. But looking at the released specs, it seems pretty decent for the price it offers.

The device will come with a 5.5-inch display that supports 1080p resolution. It will be powered by a MediaTek 1.7GHz MT6592 SoC and will be equipped with 2GB of RAM and 16 GB of expandable storage. The upcoming smartphone is also expected to run on Android 5.1 Lollipop. In a report by Latin Post, the handset will sport a 13-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel selfie snapper.

Pepsi's new venture sounds exciting and fun but reports say that although the company is connecting with a licensing partner to include mobile phones in their market, it has no plans of totally jumping into the smartphone manufacturing industry. They are only doing this in order to draw more customers to buy their products.
