'Person of Interest' season 5 spoilers: Shaw returns; possible end to the series?

In the last season, the hit series "Person of Interest" ended in a harrowing way when the machine that spewed out numbers suddenly went offline and was destroyed, but not before its core data was downloaded and safely hidden inside a briefcase. So, what does this mean for next season? More trouble for the characters it seems.

In the upcoming season, which might possibly be the last, fans will get to see a different Harold Finch (Michael Emerson) this time around and his relationship with the machine. Fans will also get to see how the team builds the machine back up and running. There will also be an episode that will feature the machine's perspective.

In the new season, detective Lionel Fusco (Kevin Chapman) will find himself in the hot seat as he lands in the middle of an internal affairs investigation during the course of the season. He finally discovers the existence of the machine, while questions will be raised about the events in the finale.

Actor Keith David, the "Enlisted" alum, will guest star in the next season. He will play Terence Beale, a CIA supervisory agent. His character is described as clever, sly, and is the one that knows where all the skeletons are buried.

Executive producer Greg Plageman said that the last episode of the upcoming season "could be the series finale as well" — and he's already envisioned how the series' final moments might play out, despite his belief that there's still "a lot more story to tell." Furthermore, he mentioned that each season's finale is treated like it's the last one.

The forthcoming season will also see the return of actress Sarah Shahi, who plays Sameen Shaw, a government assassin that becomes an ally of Finch and John Reese (Jim Caviezel). "I go back in September — full-time. I'll probably do eight or nine of the 13 episodes," she said. The actress recently giave birth to twins and was not seen in the later episodes of the previous season. And as for her storyline, she has no idea what the writer's plans are.

The brand-new season will only run for 13 episodes, but it will be jam-packed with action, or as Plageman said, "straight chaser, no filler." Fans of the show will not want to miss a single episode as it is set to return mid-season of next year.
