'Persona 5': Main Protagonist's Name

The "Persona" video game series is known for its strange history when it comes to protagonist names. Since both the third and fourth installments of the franchise had a name, fans are clamoring to know if the main protagonist of "Persona 5" actually has a name, too.

In "Persona 4," the protagonist was Yu Narukami. This name was consistent across the full series of "Persona 4" games, although the name was later replaced with Souji Seta in the manga. In "Persona 3," the main protagonist was revealed to be named Minato Arisato.

The fact that the protagonists of the previous installments had a name is one of the reasons why many fans were surprised when Atlus did not seem to give a canon name for the main character in "Persona 5." Actually, they did.

In the official manga, the name of the protagonist of "Persona 5" is Akira Kurusu, Akira being his given name and Kurusu being his family name. The name of the bespectacled hero remains mostly unknown though, since everyone in the voice clips always refers to him as "Joker" or "this guy."

Many fans do not know that the "Persona 5" hero actually has a name, primarily because of the voiceover which calls him by different names. Over the course of the game, the voiceover calls him "Joker," while in the Velvet Room, attendants call him Igor, Caroline or Justine. The attendants also occasionally refer to him by a variety of names such as Trickster, Prisoner or Inmate. Some of the party members refer to him as Leader, just as how they referred to the main protagonists in the previous installments.

Fans who did not know that the hero of the fifth instalment actually has a canon name have used their creativity in coming up with a cool name for the hero. Now they don't necessarily have to, since it has been cleared that he has a canon name.
