'Phantom Thread' Movie News, Release Date: Focus Features Drops Trailer for Daniel Day-Lewis' Final Film

Focus Features has released the trailer for "Phantom Thread" starring Daniel Day-Lewis in what is perhaps his last role.

The trailer opens in London, where celebrated dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Day-Lewis) is preparing himself. He meets Alma (Vicky Krieps) and becomes enamored with her. While everything initially goes well in their relationship, it is soon made clear that there is a reason why girls never stay with Woodcock for long.

According to the official logline, the film is set in 1950's London after the war. The House of Woodcock, managed by Reynolds and his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville), is the standard of British fashion. Woodcock has never had a problem with love, choosing to remain a bachelor, with women serving only as companions or inspiration for the designer. However, everything in his life changes when he meets Alma.

The upcoming film is particularly buzzworthy due to Day-Lewis retiring from acting, making "Phantom Thread" his last project. It was revealed by Variety earlier this year that the three-time Academy Award winner will not be acting in any more films.

"Daniel Day-Lewis will no longer be working as an actor," spokeswoman Leslee Dart told the publication in a statement. "He is immensely grateful to all of his collaborators and audiences over the many years. This is a private decision and neither he nor his representatives will make any further comment on this subject. "

However, Day-Lewis will still be promoting "Phantom Thread," which was directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. Day-Lewis and Anderson previously worked together in 2007's "There Will Be Blood," for which the former won an Academy Award for Best Actor. He received two other Oscars for his work in 1990's "My Left Foot" and 2013's "Lincoln." He was nominated another two times for 1994's "In the Name of the Father" and 2003's "Gangs of New York."

The 60-year-old renowned actor is known for being very selective when it comes to roles, having only appeared in 21 feature films in a span of four decades.

"Phantom Thread" will hit U.S. cinemas on Christmas Day, Dec. 25.
