Philadelphia Eagles NFL Trade, Roster Rumors: Ronald Darby to Miss Four to Six Weeks Due to Dislocated Ankle
People were expecting the worst when Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Ronald Darby suffered an injury in his right ankle in the second quarter of their season opener against the Washington Redskins. It looked severe and he was taken off the field in a cart. Some observers had even speculated that he might have fractured his ankle, and that would require surgery and a lengthy layoff.
Fortunately, the injury wasn't that bad. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport has reported that Darby only suffered a dislocated ankle during the game and he did not suffer any major ligament damage. Rapoport added that the cornerback was only going to be sidelined for four to six weeks.
Well, a dislocated ankle is never good news. However, Darby and the Eagles may have dodged a bullet here. They are still going to lose him for a few weeks, but at least it's not a season-ending injury.
Eagles head coach Doug Pederson did not confirm the timetable for Darby's return, but he did note that the cornerback will be back this season.
"This is something we're going to gather a little more information on this. Talking with our doctors and (director of sports medicine/head athletic trainer Chris) Peduzzi we need to get some more information on it before we make a full statement on it," Pederson said, via the Eagles' official website.
"We'll look at that this week too. We do have obviously Rasul sitting there and C.J. (Smith) but we'll look at it, talk with (defensive coordinator Jim) Schwartz the next couple days, and have a plan. If (Darby) can't go, then possibly Rasul," he added.
Veteran journeyman Patrick Robinson will likely start in Darby's place while he's recuperating. Rasul Douglas should see some playing time as well. The rookie cornerback was inactive in the game against the Redskins last Sunday, but he should play a larger role going forward.
