Pittsburgh Steelers News: Injuries early on may take their toll on the team.

The Steelers face the New England Patriots.

Ahead of their much-anticipated tilt against the New England Patriots to officially start the National Football League season, the Pittsburgh Steelers are facing bigger odds than the team they are facing.

Add to the fact that they are heading to the Gillette Stadium facing the Super Bowl champions and a very determined Tom Brady after he beat the "Deflategate" scandal, the Steelers appear weakened even before they step foot on the field.

Injuries appear to be taking a toll on the team at such an early part of the campaign and there is a list of significant players who won't dress up in the season opener.

Pittsburgh recently picked up three rookies that were supposed to overhaul the team's secondary after a horrible place last year.

Cornerback Senquez Golson will not see action for the whole year after going through shoulder surgery, while Doran Grant is on the practice team after failing to make an impression during training camp.

Finally, Gerod Holliman was recently cut by the team despite a promising career in college.

Strong Safety Shamarko Thomas was highly touted to replace Troy Polamalu, but after a bad campaign in the preseason, the Steelers may not include him in the line-up.

Pittsburgh boasts a real offensive threat with Ben Roethlisberger in the quarterback position. He has an arsenal of players that are considered high caliber, especially wide receiver Antonio Brown who is considered the best in the position.

Unfortunately, against New England who are also out with something to prove, it may not be to their advantage as it would mean they would have to pile on the points on the offensive end to make-up for the negatives that their defenses would present.

The two teams will meet on Thursday and the game starts at 8:30 PM ET.
