PlayStation 4 Neo to be Presented in Tokyo Game Show; Release Date, Prices and Technical Specifications

PlayStation 4 Neo is set to storm the gaming world this September with the unveiling scheduled on September 7 at the Tokyo Game Show in New York. Reports indicate that the new console by Sony Inc. will sport almost twice the power of its predecessor, the PlayStation 4. The event is reminiscent of 2013 when Sony held the PlayStation Meeting and unveiled the earlier version of the machine in a similar fashion.

Currently, there are no clear details on what games will be showcased to run in the Neo version of PlayStation. There are indications that the games currently in PS4 can still be played using compatibility mode. With this setup, Neo and the currently available games can still run altogether, while console-specific games are still being developed along with their update packs.

Meanwhile, there are no foreseen problems for games released this fall since they can already take advantage of the Neo features. Gamers are expecting huge improvements when loading 4K games in terms of screen resolution and higher frame rate. So far, the best attribute PS4 Neo has is the excellent visual quality.

Two modes

For the technical features of PlayStation 4 Neo, the new console boasts an APU with 14nm FinFET which is designed by AMD for performance-specific purpose in terms of per watt gains. Two modes are also incorporated into Neo, starting with the Base Mode that can run as exact copy of previous PlayStations, then the Neo Mode which has a capability to run with twice the power.

PlayStation Neo will also address the problems coming with the new generation of consoles that sports Virtual Reality support. None of them can truly handle the strain from middle to high-end hardware such as HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. Take note, this is no longer the problem with Neo since it packs 2.3 times the muscle compared to older versions.

Release details

To be clear, there is no official release from Sony that can accurately describe Neo in terms of technical numbers. But with pinpointed hardware from the developers and ADM, it is safe to assume that Neo will end up with 2.1 GHz clock rate compared to the "old" PlayStation clock rate at 1.6 GHz. This could also mean that PlayStation 4's rated floating point of 1.84 can translate to around 2.14 TFLOPs in Neo.

Lastly, for interested gamers who want to pre-order PlayStation 4 Neo, Sony's website did not disclose yet when it would be open. The best guess is that Neo will land at around $350 or a bit more at local shops, a price that is still within the range of older PS4.
